What To Expect When Expecting A New Puppy

Holding a tiny, wriggling bundle of joy in your arms creates feelings like nothing else. Only holding a newborn baby is better. If you new arrival is a puppy, then you need to prepare. The process is less invasive than with a new baby, and there are no shower gifts. There are many puppy offers, and you can help one have the best home possible.

Setting The Scene

Your new family member may be shy and tired when arriving home. Make sure your pup has a place to curl up and relax. Set up a space that will be your pet's area. Put down soft bedding, and clear the room of anything dangerous to a young animal. Your puppy may be scared after meeting new people and being taken to a new place. Keep the area dark and quiet, and give the puppy a few blankets to hide under.

Newborn Mode

You puppy may grow up to have an entirely differently personality than when you two first met. This is because there are certain things a puppy needs that a dog does not. For example, your dog may not like playing with toys much, but your puppy needs to chew. Give your pup ropes or squeaky toys to ensure they do not find their own teething materials like shoes or clothing.

House Rules

Have these in place before the puppy arrives. If you let your furry friend sit on the couch for a few weeks, then it is too late to teach the puppy to stay off once you realize you do not like the shedding. Establishing firm rules is essential when teaching your pup appropriate behavior. If you keep changing your mind, it is not your pet's fault for doing something wrong. You may realize some things after having your puppy in the house, but try to establish as much consistency as possible. Altering rules and habits confuses your pup and does not allow he or she to become comfortable. Puppies may protest when they get excited, but they need routine feeding times and breaks.

Kid Proofing The Puppy

Most children are thrilled when they hear they will soon have a new puppy to play with. Kids are excited about puppies, but they might not know how to treat a pet. It is important to explain that the new puppy is not a toy, and children should be gentle and kind to this new friend. Kids may want the puppy to play all the time or do things an animal should not do. Unruly children can add stress to your pet's life. This can lead to health problems or a skittish temperament when the puppy grows. Give your child basic lessons about caring for the puppy, and supervise until you are sure the child understands proper behavior towards the pup.

Whether raising a puppy or a child, every parent makes mistakes. Getting to know your puppy is a process, and will not be perfect. However, giving your pup a room, supplies, house rules and a safe environment will take care of most problems. Love and affection will take care of the rest.
